Luis Severino was one of the worst starting pitchers in all of baseball last season with the Yankees.
A lot has changed from the 2023 campaign to his new team in Queens in 2024.
Severino has been a godsend to a Mets rotation that needed someone to step up when Kodai Senga went down.
Sevy finished last year with a dismal 6.65 ERA over 18 starts with the Yanks.
He’s had a drastic turnaround for the better with the Mets: 8-6 and a 3.91 ERA in 24 starts, including most recently a complete game shutout.
While he hasn’t left the city of New York, Sevy made some key changes to his game on and off the field.
The Mets starter joined Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on “The Show” this week to talk about it.
“The Show” podcast with Joel Sherman & Jon Heyman:
- METS PLAYOFF CHANCES: Have to win that game Sunday. This homestand has been underwhelming so far. No excuse to lose that game to Marlins. Should they have gone more all-in at the trade deadline?
- YANKEES: Should they consider sending Anthony Volpe down? Their lineup is not great all around.
Luis Severino Interview:
Mets pitcher
- HEALTH: Knowing body more, when to push it, when to hold back, sleeping. Hired a sleep doctor.
- COMPLETE GAME: Finishing off the game on Saturday and what he said to Carlos Mendoza.
- CHANGING HIS GAME: Searching for more innings than strikeouts during the first half of the season. Still has the 98-99 when needing it, but will navigate with 95-96 to get outs.
- FUTURE: Loves the Mets and playing here. Will let agent take care of it. Hopefully can come back to Mets.
- PLAYOFF RACE: There is no pressure because people didn’t think they would be in this position. Just have to think about winning series.
- YANKEES/METS: Biggest difference is there is more pressure being on the Yankees.
- CARLOS MENDOZA: Should be in the top 2-3 managers of the year.
