Lenin statue removed from Russian town controlled by Ukraine



A long-standing monument to Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin lost face after Ukrainian forces pushed into the area.

The silver monument in the town of Sudzha, which depicts Lenin standing with one hand in his pocket, was missing a large chunk of its face and head after Ukraine took control of the area Thursday.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy released a photo of the empty pedestal in the town square, where the statue once stood, claiming it had been removed after it was damaged by Ukrainian artillery.

“The process of decommunization continues,” reads the photo’s caption.

“In Sudzha, too.”

Sudzha is located within the Kursk region of Russia.

Since 2013, Ukraine has demolished the majority of its Communist monuments.

The only remaining Lenin statue is said to stand in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
