Byron York cited former President Donald Trump’s four years in office for why his 2024 running mate is able to perform well in interviews, as it allows Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) to reference what Trump did in the past.
Vance, who was selected by Trump as his vice presidential nominee on July 15, had only been a senator for 18 months when he was picked by the former president, and it “took him awhile” to get his footing as Trump’s running mate. Since then, York, the Washington Examiner’s chief political correspondent, argued that Vance is definitely “getting better” in his new role in the Trump campaign.
“I would say one more thing: Vance is able to give really good interviews in part because Donald Trump’s position and records are so well known and well established,” York said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle. “Tim Walz cannot come out and give an interview now until Kamala Harris decides what her positions are, and then, he can defend them. Until then, we’re not going to hear from him much either.”
Vance has been vocal in supporting Trump since becoming the nominee while also playing offense for the campaign, criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), and claiming the Minnesota governor left the National Guard for political pursuits.
Harris, who was certified last week as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, has yet to conduct an interview since stepping in for President Joe Biden, with York arguing this is because she and her campaign do not see the need to. York referenced how Harris is now polling well against Trump while receiving “glowing” coverage from the press, citing the recent cover story that Time magazine did for her.
“And my guess is you won’t see much from her unless things turn south a bit,” York predicted.
Time magazine stated in its story that Harris refused to do an interview with the outlet.

In one of Vance’s interviews since becoming Trump’s running mate, the Ohio senator argued that the child tax credit ought to be expanded to $5,000 per child. He also said he would like to end surprise medical bills for parents in a potential second term of Trump.
While Harris and Trump are set to face each other in a debate hosted by ABC News on Sept. 10, a specific date for the vice presidential debate has not been announced. Despite this, Vance has expressed his enthusiasm for debating Walz, as it is “really important to stand before the American people” and make the case for them to cast their vote.
